It is with regret that Esquel Group Foundation announces the death of Juan Felipe Yriart, who served as its President and had been one of its more active and supportive members.

Esquel plans the publication of a book related to strengthening citizenship (cidadania) as a living memorial to Juan Felipe Yriart.

Below is a resume of Mr. Yriart and the feelings expressed upon hearing of his death by two of Esquel’s Founders as well as close collaborators of Mr. Yriart, Stahis Panagides, and Roberto Mizrahi.

Who was Juan Felipe Yriart: An Uruguayan, member of the Board of the Esquel Group Foundation, and Chairman until June 1995 and President from 1984 to 1993. He had been a Senior Advisor to the Office of Strategic Planning and Operations Policy Department at the Inter-American Development Bank and a consultant to the President for orienting the IDB’s approach to civil society. Ambassador Yriart had had a long career of public service with his own Government as Minister to Sweden and Ambassador to the Netherlands and the United States, as well as Director General of Uruguay’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He had been Assistant Director General, Regional Representative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for Latin America, headed FAO’s Development Department, and was responsible for field and investment programs until he was appointed Director General ad interim of the World Food Program. Amb. Yriart then directed an Uruguayan political party-affiliated research and advisory group, until the new government appointed him Executive Director of the IDB. After a year as Advisor to Uruguay’s President on international financial cooperation, he returned for one year to the IDB as Executive Director. In his conference and seminar presentations and policy papers, he brought to bear his experience in public service to develop pragmatic, workable approaches to strengthen civil society in the region and to foster cooperation among civil society organizations, multilateral institutions, government, and business.

Dear Riley and family,

I have known many individuals of strength, determination and commitment to doing good, but few as enchanting and inspiring as Juan Felipe. He was indeed an extraordinary human being who will be greatly missed.

I am writing these lines recalling the so many memories of my association with Juan Felipe, and while sad, I smile at the same time, recalling our many debates and visions on how to help his beloved Latin America (with a bit more special love for his Uruguay!), and how after heated discussions he would convinced us all that we had to act, and now! His unabated energy and vigor was an inspiration to us all.

His love and commitment to Esquel made possible the foundation’s outreach and valuable work in much of what we did and are now doing. The Esquel family will miss him very much.

I am communicating with his colleagues at Esquel to see how best, and in consultation with you, we honor his memory and celebrate a life that will remain a living example for all of us.

I am writing this note from my native Cyprus regretting that I will not be able to attend the funeral and with the hope that Joy will be able to make arrangements to be present to share the grief but also celebrate a unique and beautiful life.

Message to Marisol Pages, former Program Director of Esquel Group Foundation, from Roberto Mizrahi co-founder of Esquel

Querida Marisol:

Aprecio muchísimo tus sentidas líneas así como las que escribieron Stahis, Arthur, Ken, Antonio,Carlos, Mirella, y todos los demás Esquelinos. En verdad la partida de Juan Felipe nos conmociono profundamente.

No es que no hayamos captado un poco de la centenaria filosofía chipriota de Stahis y no sepamos que la vida misma es un pasaje por el que transitamos un tiempo finito. La partida de Juan Felipe fue tan inevitable como lo será la partida de cada uno de nosotros. Sin embargo, y aunque tengo todo el espíritu abierto para focalizarme en celebrar su vida, tengo también que decir muy sinceramente que llore largo y con muchísima tristeza cuando recibí la noticia. Aun hoy cuando lo evoco se humedece el recuerdo.

Juan Felipe fue para muchos de nosotros un gran amigo y, aunque el no se hubiere sentido cómodo de admitirlo, también algo de padre.

Lo conocí a fines de los 70 cuando se retiraba de la FAO y creía que pasaría a ser un jubilado. Cuan lejos Juan Felipe de poder ser un verdadero jubilado!!! . Por supuesto que no lo fue en esa época (rápidamente le ofrecieron ser Director del BID representando a Uruguay), ni nunca mas. Un año tras otro fue cada vez mas activo y comprometido con lo que hacia. Y en toda esa época llevo Esquel muy cerca de sus intereses centrales.

Cuando trasladábamos la idea de Esquel de Ecuador a Washington DC, Carlos, Silvio, Magdalena, Stahis y yo encontramos en Juan Felipe la convalidación que necesitaba esa idea emergente: nuestra iniciativa era valida. Porque si alguien con la trayectoria y prestigio de Juan Felipe podía enamorarse de ese proyecto, entonces la iniciativa tendría el merito que nosotros le asignábamos.

Después vinieron muchos años de compartir, construir, y hasta discutir entre nosotros. Estuvimos siempre muy cerca de corazón adentro. Aun cuando disentimos en mas de una oportunidad. Sin ninguna duda, Juan Felipe fue un pilar de toda la evolución de Esquel hacia nuestro interés por un desarrollo justo y balanceado, por una sociedad civil vigorosa y protagonista. También fue un uruguayo cabal y pleno.

Porque si bien vivió muchos años en Europa y los Estados Unidos, amo Uruguay profundamente. Tenia su circulo grande de la política mundial y los grandes temas de la globalización pero, allí dentro, cerca de sus afectos masíntimos estaba Montevideo, Uruguay, su afiliación partidaria, los diarios uruguayos, sus permanentes visitas de connacionales y aquellos amigos viejos de corazón blando que había sembrado en su juventud montevideana.

Le conté a algunos de Uds. que ese domingo que murió Juan Felipe dormí muy sobresaltado. No entendí bien porque pero bueno, en esta vida moderna y en el stress multiplicado de estos tiempos argentinos, esas cosas suceden de vez en cuando. Sin embargo cuando me entere por un e-mail de Arthur sobre su partida, me imagine que habría sido su alma la que había pasado a despedirse.

Como a veces sucede con quienes no tenemos del todo lograda la sabiduría andina o mediterránea, la partida de Juan Felipe me sorprendió sin haber tenido la oportunidad de despedirlo. Así que después de su partida le escribí un e-mail descontando que las almas acceden a cualquier forma de comunicación.

A veces Juan Felipe nos lidero con sus ideas y gerenciamiento, y otras tuvo la generosidad de hacer de buen espejo para que pudiéramos vernos con mejor perspectiva.

Fue una persona integra aunque, como todos los humanos, con contradicciones y sentimientos encontrados. Pero el saldo, ese balance existencial que hace que lo extrañemos tanto, fue de los mejores que he conocido.
